Five Ways to Honor & Delight the Fae this Midsommer

Today is Midsommar (also known as Litha), the Summer Solstice. It is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, with sunlight stretching for over 15 hours where I am. Metaphysically and metaphorically, we can contemplate how our consciousness waxes during the longer solar periods (days) and wanes during the shorter periods (ie. winter). Honoring cyclical living, including the innersphere, helps us live with more peace, joy, and harmony.

At the same time, we can recognize that the veil is thin, allowing us to perceive interdimensional and higher-dimensional Beings. Just today, I've seen more than one higher-dimensional Being as well as "sparkles." These sparkles are something I associate with the Fae.

This time of year is closely associated with the Fae, as is Beltane (May 1st). Springtime is a lovely time to connect with the blooming flowers and sunshine and spend time outdoors. When we spend time in nature, our brains and minds naturally harmonize!

You don't have to believe in actual Faeries to enjoy this time of year. The weather becomes beautiful, sunshine is abundant, and the trees and flowers bloom and grow. Spending time outside is refreshing after a long winter indoors.

All About the Fae

The Fae are famous for their love of sweets. Traditional offerings include milk and honey, but we are going to get creative! Strawberries are in season for a short time (until the end of June... -ish), so below you'll find a recipe for strawberry iced tea. Not only is it delicious, but it is cooling for these hot days. It is my intention that you will use this recipe over and over, as well as continue to offer it to the Fae.

Working with the Fae is about relationships. The Fae, like any other Beings, have both benevolent and mischievous personalities. It's important to cultivate a relationship, to make friends, and to prevent them from playing tricks on you! Most of their tricks include hiding things, so if something goes missing after putting out this offering, you know who is at fault.

Strawberry Iced Tea

a glass mug of red strawberry tea with strawberries and mint on top

Makes 4 cups

Ingredients

  • 4 cups water, plus 1/4 cup

  • 4 rooibos tea bags (or 1 tbsp loose leaf)

  • 1 heaping cup strawberries, hulled and sliced

  • 2-3 tbsp honey (to taste)

  • juice of 1/2 lemon (to taste)

  • ice

Directions

  1. Boil 4 cups of water and steep the tea for 5-6 minutes. Optionally, brew the tea during the day in sunlight for about 4-6 hours. Remove tea bags and allow to cool slightly.

  2. For the strawberry sauce: in a saucepan, combine strawberries with ¼ cup water and your sweetener. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until the strawberries break down. Mash lightly with a fork and strain for a smoother texture.

  3. Combine tea and strawberry syrup, stirring to combine. Add lemon juice, if using. Chill for one hour.

  4. Pour over ice and serve with fresh sliced strawberries, if desired.

Leaving Your Offering

When making an offering to the Fae, it's best to place your offerings in small dishes and leave them in nature. I typically leave mine by a tree. You'll want to leave your offering all day or all night. When the time is up, you can pour your offering onto the earth. It's important to make sure your ingredients are all-natural for this reason! This tea is all-natural and will nourish the earth you pour it onto. This can act as a secondary offering as the Fae love it when we care for the Earth!

Remember that this is the beginning of a relationship, a friendship. Don't leave this as a one-and-done offering. You want to cultivate a connection, just as you would with a human friend. It takes time, effort, and dedication. But when you have that relationship, the Fae are powerful friends and allies!

One: Fresh Flowers & Shiny Baubles

In addition to your strawberry iced tea (or as a replacement), there are many other options or adornments you can use. Fresh flowers, preferably sustainably wildcrafted, can adorn your tea offering. You can also use those in place of the tea. If you want to go the extra mile, place your small bowl or glass in the middle of a fresh flower ring,

There is so much lore about "fairy rings" that I'm sure you've heard of them! They can be found in forests or remote places (or even your backyard!) and made of plants, flowers, mushrooms, or stones. It's said that they are portals to the Fairy world, but it's disrespectful to just barge in. Leaving offerings and cultivating a relationship next to the naturally occurring Fairy ring may allow you to sit and meditate in the ring, which may allow you to expand your consciousness into their dimension (much like shamanic journeying).

In addition to flowers and/or strawberry tea, you can also leave small shiny things! The Fae love anything that shines or glitters, which is why they often steal or hide things like car keys, buttons, coins, and the like. If you are hard-pressed to make strawberry tea or have no access to fresh flowers, leaving a few coins or other baubles can help you begin your relationship with the Fae. Just remember to pick these items up rather than leave them strewn about in nature. You can place them in a dedicated wooden box or other carefully chosen place.

Two: Fairy Gardens

One of the most well-known ways to make friends with the Fae is to make a Fairy garden! Fairy gardens include some sort of small plant, often a succulent, and little items that make the potted plant look like a garden or home. These can get extremely intricate, but don't have to be. These are also a great option if you live in a city and have limited access to undisturbed nature.

If you do have or create a Fairy garden, and wish to give an offering, simply place it on a bare spot in your garden (you may leave a dedicated place for this) or next to your potted plant. Leave for the day or overnight, then dispose.

Three: Singing & Bells

One of the most effective (and free!) ways to give an offering to the Fae is to simply use your voice or shake some simple bells! We often think we have to have some fancy offering or items, but the truth is, intention rules. If we approach the Fae with the intention of connecting with respect and love, our voice will suffice.

You don't have to have a certain song, lyrics, or even a specified tune! Simply letting your voice wander and attune to the energies is one of the most powerful ways to connect. In some traditions, using your voice to heal is prevalent (they are called icaros). Sometimes they are a specific tune or have certain words (taught by the plants), but I've found it effective to just let my voice wander and attune to my chakras and areas of my body that need healing.

Consider using your voice or, if you have bells or a singing bowl, offering music to the Fae!

Four: The Power of Pink

Pink represents unconditional love, so spending a day wearing, using, meditating, or creating with pink will help you connect. Another great color would be yellow, which represents friendship. These are both floral colors, which attune your heart to the right frequency to connect to the Fae.

A great way to use these colors is simply to light a colored candle. The flame and smoke will carry your intention across the veil. Let the candle burn out instead of snuffing it out, if possible; if you need to snuff it out, it's better to use a candle snuffer (or small dedicated glass - make sure it's glass!) rather than blow it out, as it's said that is an aggressive way to treat your candle, which can cancel out your intention.

You can anoint your candle with floral essential oils as well, if desired!

Five: Unseen Random Acts of Kindness

The Fae work in the unseen realms, across the veil, but they do interact with the physical plane. They often bless us in unrecognized ways. In honor of this, we can pay it forward by anonymously blessing others around us with random acts of kindness.

Some ideas:

  • paying for the person's fast food behind us in the drive-through

  • leaving a basket of herbs, flowers, or canned goods on someone's front porch

  • hiding a motivational message on a notecard in a library book

  • giving a cashier a $5 gift card

  • picking up trash in a high-traffic area

  • sending an anonymous thank-you card to your child's teacher

  • scattering coins on the ground around a parking meter

  • putting up sticky notes with affirmations in public places

Together, with the guidance of the Fae, we can make the world a better place! While the Fae can be mischievous, it's normally harmless (although annoying at times!). For the most part, they encourage us to be better humans and help us evolve our souls.

To delight in the Fae, to delight in the sunshine, is to delight in life. And I want you to have a delightful life!
